Art historian Melissa Hyde argues that the critics of Pompadour were driven by fears over the overturning of social and gender hierarchies that Pompadour's power and influence, as a woman who was not born into the aristocracy, represented. Her relationship with Louis XV, a man of immense carnal. (Even in the Court of Versailles, women faced glass ceilings). Hostile critics at the time generally tarred her as a malevolent political influence, but historians are more favorable, emphasizing her successes as a patron of the arts and a champion of French pride. Madame Pompadour broke through an enormous social barrier for women of society - she was the first of the bourgeoisie to be appointed 'official mistress' to a French King. She was a patron of the philosophes of the Enlightenment, including Voltaire. Pompadour was a major patron of architecture and decorative arts, especially porcelain. On 8 February 1756, the Marquise de Pompadour was named as the thirteenth lady-in-waiting to the queen, a position considered the most prestigious at the court, which accorded her with honors. She was particularly careful not to alienate the Queen, Marie Leszczyńska. She secured titles of nobility for herself and her relatives, and built a network of clients and supporters. Pompadour took charge of the king's schedule and was a valued aide and advisor, despite her frail health and many political enemies.

An international literary event: Ten new stories from a beloved and award-winning author. Condition: Very Good+ ( see Description ). Shaw picked up his towel from the back of a chair. Readers with a history of rape or sexual abuse may find elements of this story disturbing. This book contains explicit sexual situations, graphic language, and material that some readers may find objectionable: male/male sexual practices, violence, flashback to sexual violence. Keeping his hands off Lee proves harder than he thinks, but Shaw’s not stupid enough to fall for the tortured captive of a dangerous crime boss, is he? If he did, it wouldn’t be just his job he would be risking-it would be his life. And too bad there are some lines that even Shaw won’t cross. Too bad there’s nothing Shaw can do for him. Too bad there’s no way Lee is getting off the island. It’s none of Shaw’s business, and it doesn’t matter that under any other circumstances Lee would be exactly Shaw’s type: he’s young, he’s hot, and he might even have a personality if they hadn’t beaten it out of him. But then Vornis parades his latest toy around in front of him - a captured DEA agent whose time is running out. It will be the deal of a lifetime, if Shaw can pull it off. Shaw is in Fiji to sell a stolen painting to the crime boss, Vornis. Perhaps most interestingly, however, his work departs significantly from the main topics to provide cultural, ethnographical, and geographical background that forms an essential part of the narrative. The nine books of the Histories primarily cover the lives of prominent kings and famous battles which decided the fate of the West, such as Marathon, Thermopylae, Artemisium, Salamis, Plataea, and Mycale. By his genius, the spirit of history was born into Greece. In the end, he portrayed the drama of the great collision between East and West. These conflicts showed him that there was a corporate life, higher than that of the city, of which the story might be told. The Greco-Persian Wars had afforded Herodotus the first genuinely historical inspiration felt by a Greek person. Cicero dubbed Herodotus “Father of History”īorn in the Greek city of Halicarnassus (present-day Bodrum, Turkey), which was then part of the Persian Empire, the great man has been referred to as “The Father of History” since ancient Roman orator Cicero conferred the title on him.īefore the Persian crisis, Greeks recorded history mostly as part of local or family traditions. And then there is the sheer narrative power of his writing…The old master keeps calling us back. He goes from the cosmos to the atom, ranging between fate and the gods, on the one hand, and the ability of the individual to make a difference, on the other. A distinguished officer and advocate for building a more equal criminal justice system and society, Leroy is a founding member and former chair of the Black Police Association. Leroy Logan is a former superintendent in the Metropolitan police and author of Closing Ranks: My Life as a Cop. Leroy was in conversation with acclaimed broadcaster and author Afua Hirsch to discuss Leroy’s career challenges and successes, race relations in the UK, the myriad issues facing the Met, and how to empower the capital’s young people at a time when opportunities for them appear to be running thin. One of the founder members of the Black Police Association, his book serves as a history lesson in race relations in modern-day Britain. Leroy’s book Closing Ranks: My Life as a Cop tells of his illustrious career, giving a behind-the-scenes look at the workings of the Met. His story of changing the Met from the inside was the subject of a Small Axe film, the Golden Globe and BAFTA-winning BBC series directed by Steven McQueen. Leroy would eventually spend the next 30 years in public service, rising to the rank of superintendent. When Leroy Logan was in his mid-20s, his father (a Windrush-generation Jamaican) was brutally beaten by Metropolitan Police officers. The book enjoyed immense popularity in the years before World War I and was extremely influential. It is often called the first modern spy novel, and although others are as well, it was certainly very influential in the genre and for its time. The plot involves the uncovering of secret German preparations for an invasion of the United Kingdom. It was one of the early invasion novels which predicted war with Germany and called for British preparedness.
